Drinking water project at panachayats; people participation made

Thiruvananthapuram : The Local Self Governments are withdrawing from the overall responsibility on drinking water projects. As per the government direction, instead of LSGs contributing to the projects, the beneficiaries of the project should fund the project. Such beneficiary committee should take the overall responsibility of maintenance and repair works. The World Band aided drinking water project Jalanidhi was implemented in this way. In the 12 th year plan, the government plans to implement the system in LSGs too.
Based on the new direction, house connections would be provided instead of public taps and panchayats will not use their own fund or development fund. But for repair works and changing pipes, money could be provided from panchayats. When public taps system is abandoned, the entire households would be given individual connections. All these directions are being prescribed in the draft proposal related to allotting subsidies. But the consumers should take the connection at their own cost. The consumer can be given subsidy as when they submit certificate after completing the work. For public wells, such act is not applicable.
