School noon meal system to witness major changes
Thiruvananthapuram: As per the new circular issued by the state government, the noon meal scheme in schools will witness major changes. From now onwards, there would be more dishes, apart from rice and green gram, and the noon meal scheme committee can decide the menu.

As per the circular, the government will provide only rice. The committee should buy provisions according to the flavour of that locality. The government will also stop direct supply of eggs and milk. Schools should buy it and the government will provide money.

But teachers' associations are apprehensive if funds would be sufficient to meet the costs, which is the responsibility of the noon meal committee. PTA president will be chairman and head master will be the convener of the committee. Other members are ward member, two teachers, a mother PTA member and two SC/ST representatives.

If the money provided by the government is not sufficient, the committee can seek the help of LSGs, persons, voluntary organizations and MLAs.

In schools up to 100 students, the expense for each student would be approximately Rs 4 and Rs 150 as cooking charge per day. In schools with 500 students, the expense would be Rs 5 and cooking charge.

DPI Shahjahan said the government aims to provide more tasty foods for students through this revamp.

Each day, number of students having food must be put up on the notice board. The committee should convene a meeting each month and records should be submitted to the AEO..
