Selja to reexamine classical language status for Malayalam

The Centre will reexamine the issue of denial of granting Malayalam classical language status, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said today.
Addressing a press conference, Mr Chandy said he had met Union Minister for Culture Kumari Selja and requested her to consider the objections raised by State of Kerala in response to a report of Linguistic Experts Committee that examined the claim of Malayalam language to be accorded the status of classical language.

He said he had pointed out that the Committee had finalised the report without ascertaining the evidence provided by scholars of the language and without giving the state government an opportunity for presenting its views.

The report of the committee was also not unanimous in having rejected the claim of Malayalam language being of high antiquity or its text recorded history over a period of 1500-2000 years.

The disappointment was also on account of the fact that the committee did not have representation from Malayalam scholars, he added. (UNI
